DiMe Media was proud to partner with P&G’s Orgullosa and actress and breast cancer survivor Adamari López during a Breast Cancer Awareness Month kick-off in Miami, FL. The October 1st event drew in Miami-based influencers to amplify Orgullosa’s mission of raising breast cancer awareness among the Latina community.

According to the American Cancer Society, one U.S. Latina dies from breast cancer every 90 minutes.

Orgullosa’s mission is based on the courage of one with the support of many — no Latina is alone in her journey with breast cancer.

López and Miami-based Hemotologist/Oncologist Dr. Pedro De La Rosa engaged in a Q&A for attendees and spoke about the importance of early detection in women with or without a family history of breast cancer.

López told the audience that when she was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 33, it was a shock. Luckily, it’s been ten years since she overcame the battle, but now she’s working to show other Latinas how important it is to pay close attention to their bodies. And it’s very simple to do.

“An annual mammogram can save your life,” said Dr. De La Rosa. “Get to know your family’s history. It will be the biggest asset in keeping you and your children healthy.”

To get involved and do your part,  schedule a mammogram if you are aged 30 or over. If you have a family history of breast cancer, start even earlier. Self-examination is a regular and hassle-free way that many women can get a jump start on their awareness from puberty into adulthood. Remember, amigas, we can never be too safe!

Additionally, Orgullosa is drawing on the power of its social network of more than a million Latinas and created a series of social postcards that will be available on Orgullosa’s Facebook throughout October. The goal is to inspire Nueva Latinas to talk about early breast cancer detection. For every postcard shared on Facebook, Orgullosa will donate $1 to Liga Contra El Cancer, up to $30,000.
